With the guidance of experienced local experts, each day brings new challenges, captivating views, and a true immersion in one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in Africa. Conquer Margherita Summit and revel in the serenity and accomplishment of standing atop this remote, icy peak. This journey promises an awe-inspiring experience for avid trekkers seeking a blend of adventure, natural beauty, and achievement.
Day 1: Mihunga to Nyabitaba Hut Begin your hike through lush farmlands and local homesteads, immersing yourself in the vibrant culture of the region. After a few hours, you’ll arrive at the park gate for registration before entering the montane zone, the first of many ecological zones in the Rwenzori Mountains. In this zone, keep an eye out for a variety of bird species, elephant trails, and unique wildlife like the three-horned chameleon and playful monkeys. Overnight at Nyabitaba Hut.
Day 2: Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Camp Descend to the right from Nyabitaba Hut, following the trail down to the forest, where you’ll cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge just below the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. The trail leads you through a serene bamboo forest before the terrain becomes more challenging, with slippery rocks leading up to Nyamuleju Resting Hut. After a 7-8 hour trek, arrive at John Matte Camp for the night.
Day 3: John Matte Camp to Bujuku Camp The trail descends to the Bujuku River, leading you into the lower Bigo Bog, home to the towering giant lobelias. A wooden boardwalk makes the bog crossing easier, especially for those wary of the wet terrain. Continue through the upper Bigo Bog, stopping for a break near Bujuku Lake to enjoy a packed Rwenzori sandwich. After lunch, a short walk brings you to Bujuku Hut, where you’ll spend the night surrounded by the fresh, crisp mountain air.
Day 4: Bujuku Camp to Elena Hut Leaving Bujuku, the trail continues through boggy terrain, climbing the steep slopes west of Lake Bujuku and through the Groundsel Gully as you ascend to Scott Elliott Pass at 4,372 meters. A metal ladder aids in the final climb to the pass, where you’ll decide whether to continue on the central circuit or head towards Margherita Peak. If you opt for the peak, the trail to the left leads to Kitandara Hut, bypassing Margherita.
Day 5: Summit Margherita Peak For those attempting Margherita Peak (5,109 meters), an early start at 5:00 AM is essential. The climb to the Stanley Glacier and onward to the summit takes 4-5 hours, depending on weather conditions and your pace. This challenging climb is suitable for the fit and determined. After reaching the summit, spend about 30 minutes capturing the breathtaking views before descending via Alexander and Albert peaks back to Elena Hut, where you’ll be welcomed with hot soup and a well-deserved rest.
Day 6: Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut From Kitandara, the trail ascends steeply along the headwall spreading from the base of Mount Baker, continuing along the southern flank of the mountain to Freshfield Pass (2,651 meters). Here, enjoy panoramic views of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The trail then descends through rocky terrain, passing the historical Bujongolo shelter, site of the Duke of Abruzzi’s 1906 expedition. Overnight at Guy Yeoman Hut.
Day 7: Guy Yeoman Hut to Mihunga Safari Lodge The final leg of your journey takes 6-7 hours, bypassing Nyabitaba Hut as you descend towards Mihunga Safari Lodge. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with a celebratory cultural dance, honoring your achievement in conquering the Rwenzori Mountains. Celebrate with your guides and porters, then check into your room for the first hot shower after 8 days in the mountains.
